From diplomacy to public office
Dr. S. Jaishankar spent four decades in the Indian Foreign Service before entering public office. This publication documents that record from published sources.
He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977. His early and mid-career postings took him to Moscow, Washington, D.C., Sri Lanka, Budapest and Tokyo, with assignments at headquarters in the Ministry of External Affairs and at the President's Secretariat.
He went on to head Indian missions as Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2000–2004), High Commissioner to Singapore (2007–2009), Ambassador to China (2009–2013) and Ambassador to the United States (2013–2015).
From 2015 to 2018 he was Foreign Secretary, the senior-most official of the Ministry of External Affairs. In April 2018, Tata Sons announced his appointment as President, Global Corporate Affairs.
On 30 May 2019 he became External Affairs Minister. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in July 2019 and re-elected in 2023. After the 2024 general election he took the oath again as a Cabinet Minister on 9 June 2024 and kept the External Affairs portfolio.
