After his postgraduate studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr. Jaishankar joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977. His first recorded posting abroad was to the Embassy of India in Moscow, where he served as Third and then Second Secretary (Political) from 1979 to 1981.
The subject of his doctoral thesis appears in some secondary sources, but this record leaves it out because no official or authoritative source for it has been found.
