Before entering public office, he spent his career in the Indian Foreign Service. That career ended with a tenure as Foreign Secretary from 2015 to 2018.
His official profile also records a period in the private sector as President, Global Corporate Affairs at Tata Sons Private Limited. It lists the Padma Shri (2019) and two books, The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World (2020) and Why Bharat Matters (2024), which it states have been translated into multiple Indian and foreign languages.

Indian Foreign Service
He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977. According to the bio-profile published by the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., his early assignments included political work at the Embassy in Moscow (1979–1981) and at the Embassy in Washington (1985–1988). He also served in Sri Lanka as First Secretary and Political Advisor to the Indian Peace Keeping Force (1988–1990), and as Commercial Counsellor in Budapest (1990–1993). He later became Deputy Chief of Mission in Tokyo.
At headquarters, the same profile lists roles covering the Americas and Policy Planning, and as Director of the East Europe Division. It also lists Press Secretary to the President of India and head of the Americas Division. He then led Indian missions in Prague, Singapore, Beijing and Washington.

As Foreign Secretary he served from 29 January 2015 to 28 January 2018. That included a one-year extension of the original two-year term, as reported in January 2017.
Corporate role
In April 2018, Tata Sons announced his appointment as President, Global Corporate Affairs. The MEA profile records this role. He held it before joining the Union Council of Ministers in 2019.
Ministerial office and Parliament
He became External Affairs Minister on 30 May 2019. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in a by-election declared on 5 July 2019. In July 2023 he was declared elected unopposed for a further term, and he took the oath on 21 August 2023.
After the 2024 general election, he was sworn in as a Cabinet Minister on 9 June 2024. Portfolios were allocated the next day, and he kept External Affairs.
